In 2012, Google officially released a webspam algorithm update that hits spam links and link building.
The webspam algorithm then became officially known as the Google Penguin algorithm update. This information was known through a tweet by Matt Cutts – the head of Google’s webspam team.
Although Google named this algorithm Penguin. But there is no official announcement as to where the name came from.
The Google Panda algorithm name comes from one of the key engineers involved in it. Most likely the name Penguin also has a similar origin. One of my favorite theories is that this Penguin name is used in homage to DC’s Batman’s The Penguin.
Before the advent of the Google Penguin algorithm, link volume played an important part in determining web score when it was crawled, indexed, and analyzed by Google.
This means that when ranking websites according to scores for the search results pages, the websites with low quality and some content samples appear in good positions in organic search results. Let’s learn more about Google Penguin Punishment with BozzSEO!
What is the Google Penguin algorithm?
The Google Penguin algorithm, or Google Penguin for short, is one of the Google algorithms officially announced on April 24, 2012. Google Penguin was born to tighten the problem of black hat SEO, link spam and building Unnatural backlink links of some websites.
Google Penguin can cause a sudden drop in organic traffic and keyword rankings.
This algorithm will not have a strong penalty on the entire website, it only hits certain keywords or certain groups of keywords.
A bit confusing, right? Let me analyze it in detail for you!
Reasons for appearing Google Penguin
Google started the battle with low quality websites with the Google Panda algorithm. Google Penguin is seen as an extension and addition to the arsenal for Google to continue fighting.
Penguin is seen as Google’s response to websites applying black hat link building to capture search results and rankings.
“We look at and look for a solution to low-quality content. The first is with the Panda algorithm. We later noticed that there was still a lot of spam. So Penguin was designed to address that. ”Cutts speaking at the SmX Advanced 2012 conference.
The goal of this algorithm is to regain rankings for quality content websites. In addition, it also reduces the effectiveness of some black hat spam techniques.
By understanding and handling the wide variety of links websites that webmasters have, Google Penguin works to ensure that organic, authoritative, and related links are appreciated. Meanwhile the spam links will be demoted.
Google Penguin only handles inbound links of a website. Google only considers links pointing to websites. It doesn’t care about out links of that website.
The debut and the effects
When Penguin first launched in April 2012, according to Google estimates, it affected more than 3% of search results.
Penguin 2.0, this is the 4th update (including the first launch) that was released in May 2013. This time it affected about 2.3% of all queries.
The Google Penguin algorithm reduced website rankings
Immediately after the Google Penguin algorithm was introduced, webmasters and many businesses using low quality link building techniques and backlinks saw a significant decrease in organic traffic and ranking positions.
The Google Penguin algorithm did not degrade the entire website. It only deals with a few sections and only affects certain groups of keywords (spammed or over-optimized). Main products, for example, and in some cases can affect the brand as a whole.
The impact of Penguin is also possible through domain names. Therefore, changing domain name or redirecting old domain name to new one can cause many problems in the long run.
Experiments and studies show that using 301 and 302 redirects will not eliminate the effect of Google Penguin.
In the Google Webmasters Forum, John Mueller confirmed that using meta refresh from a domain to a new domain can also cause problems.
“In general, we don’t recommend using meta-refresh type redirects. This can be confusing for users and search engine crawlers. They may mistake that it is a redirect attempted. ”
Exit Google Penguin algorithm
First, you can’t skip the crucial step – Check if your website is penalized by Google. Sounds a bit redundant, right? But I want you to make sure that your website is actually penalized by Google, not that the website gets reduced in traffic, ranking because competitors do better than you.
So if the website is really penalized by Google Penguin, how to restore and get rid of google penguin here?
The disavow tool is considered as something that SEOs can apply to handle when Google penalizes. And this remains unchanged as the advent of Penguin is seen as part of the core algorithm.
In fact, there have been many studies and hypotheses published that disavowing links have no effect on link-based downgrade algorithms and manual actions. However, this theory was shot down publicly by a representative of Google.
Google recommends that the disavow tool should be used only as a last resort when dealing with spammy links. Because getting rid of a link is much easier than submitting a review request for good links.
What is Disavow File?
Disavow File is a file you send to Google. It is used to tell Google to ignore all links in the file.
Furthermore, Google will make them not have any impact on your website. As a result, bad links will no longer have a negative impact on website rankings.
